HALKIDIKI
ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF POLYGYROS
Exhibits
The antiquities on display in the gallery are organised by topographical units. The sculpture of the Archaic period in Chalkidiki is represented by an unfinished kouros from the sea off Olympiada (ancient Stageira). The finds from the excavation of Torone go back to the Bronze Age and the sub-Mycenaean period, though the majority of them are from the Protogeometric period. Only two examples of the art of figurine-modeling date from Classical times.
The items of pottery and metal-work (weapons, jewellery) of the late Archaic and Classical periods were found in tombs in various parts of Chalkidiki, such as Kastri near Polygyros, Aphytos and Neos Marmaras, Plana and Pyrgadikia.
A few characteristic groups of grave offerings are displayed from the large cemetery of ancient Akanthos at Ierissos. They date from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period. The dead were accompanied by clay vases, figurines and personal items, such as precious bronze or gold jewellery - typical examples of the art of the famous Macedonian goldsmiths.
The visitor can gain a fuller picture of human activity and the achievements of the period from the discoveries from Olynthos, the only city in Chalkidiki part of which has been systematically excavated. The site was occupied as early as the Late Neolithic period and the Bronze Age, as was the neighbouring settlement at Ayios Mamas, and has yielded information on the art of these periods in general, but mainly on the history and art of Archaic and Classical Olynthos, a city-state with multi-faceted activities in both the public and private spheres.
From the sanctuary of Zeus Ammon at Aphytis, modern Kallithea, are displayed clay members from the roof of the temple, adorned with painted and relief decoration, along with a marble head of Dionysos and fragments of vases on which inscriptions are preserved.
The two marble grave statues from the Roman period (1st century B.C) come from a funerary monument discovered at Stratoni. The exhibition is accompanied by drawings and photographs. |
